Mbox Operator Training Workshop

Join us for an immersive Mbox Operator Training Workshop on February 18-19, specifically designed for film students and industry professionals eager to master the features and functions of the Mbox media server software.


The course focuses on console programming, video playback, and media server skills. 

Workshop Highlights:

Deep Dive into Mbox: Explore the capabilities of Mbox v5, from real-time video playback to advanced pixel mapping. Learn how to create stunning multi-layer compositions and control various input and output options for live and cued events.

Hands-On Learning: Participants are asked to bring their own Apple computers. These students will actively engage in all classroom activities. We welcome experience with Mac operating systems and pixel mapping software but prioritize hands-on involvement for those familiar with video playback & lighting control.

Limited Workstations Available: We have 12 shared seats available for full participation, where we’ll provide a limited number of Mac computers and Mbox licenses (6) for students who do not have their own. These stations are intended for those with prior experience with Mac computers and media server/lighting programming/video playback skills. 


There will also be a small amount of additional participation seats for students with their own Mac & Mbox equipment. 

Observation Gallery: For those interested in learning about Mbox media server, but do not have experience or equipment, we invite you to join our gallery for observation. This space will allow you to listen, learn, and be inspired by what you see and hear without direct participation.


In order for us to best place you in the class, please fill out the short questionnaire. ALL class placements will be at the discretion of the instructor

3-DAY SEMINAR DMX Control for the Lighting Programmer & Set Lighting Technician with Chris Cotone

Join us December 17th–19th for a three - day workshop, "DMX Control for the Lighting Programmer & Set Lighting Technician," with Lighting Programmers Chris Cotone and Rob Russell. See below for course details. Class times for all days will be 10:00 AM- 4:00 PM. 

Day One:
The "DMX Control for the Lighting Programmer & Set Lighting Technician" course provides attendees with a comprehensive understanding of using DMX for television shows and feature films. Day one is structured to progressively build skills, starting from the basics of handling DMX cables and troubleshooting tools to grasping fundamental DMX concepts.
 
Day Two:
Rigging Programmer teaches attendees how to effectively lay out a lighting control system and communicate system requirements to the rigging crew. This involves patching the console, designing the networking system, generating all relative supporting documents and light plots, facilitating the installation of the entire lighting control system, and testing its functionality prior to the 1st unit arriving on set to shoot. Day  two is a direct, hands-on experience of learning the skills needed to work as a rigging programmer on film and television projects. The goal of the class is to teach students everything they need to know to be a rigging programmer and also gives attendees a taste of the pressure that the rigging programmer and set lighting technicians experience prior to a typical filming day.

Day Three: 

Introduction to Wireless DMX will give participants an in-depth look into the history of wireless technology, how wireless technology works, specific use cases, and practical applications. The objective of  Day three is to learn the core concepts of wireless communication and how these can be used most effectively and with the least potential for failure on set when utilizing wireless DMX systems. This is a direct, hands-on experience of learning the skills needed to setup and maintain wireless DMX networks.

Giving Tree - Tree Lighting Competition

The Giving Tree will be surrounded by a rig of 10-24 movers and several pixel elements and practicals.  

The design will be released no later than December 2nd, which gives you 2 weeks to design & program.   

We will provide a 3D Vectorworks file along with a full patch sheet and instrument schedule.

  

Date: December 14th  

Time: approximately  3:00 PM - 4:00 PM  

Song Duration:  30-60 seconds  (Think 1 verse, 1 chorus.)

Music: Totally up to you, but we suggest a Christmas theme!

 Rules and Regulations:

1. Limited Competitors: There are a limited number of spots available; please sign up at www.lightsxcape.com.

   

2. Preparation: you can pre-build the show or busk it. You choose the music, but we need a copy no later than 12/12. If you plan to use a time code... 

(Doors are at 2 p.m.; anyone who wants to test the rig can come in at 10 a.m. for a sound check/tech run.)

3. Timing: Your light show should be no more than 60 seconds (think 1 verse, 1 chorus).

4. Judging Criteria: The audience and your fellow programmers will pick their favorite number!

5. Prize: The winner of the competition will receive an Meta-Quest 3 headset as a reward for their impressive work. 

6. It's for a worthy cause: The theme of the party (and of Open Source as a whole) is "Knowledge is power; please give it freely."

The event is focused around a toy drive for kids, which we are calling the GIVING TREE. (thats the tree you're lighting.)
